Using the last of the snow from his backyard, Silvin Roth, cranks out a batch of ice cream at his Good Street home in New Hamburg earlier this month. Roth said he’s made homemade ice cream since living on his farm west of town where the family would put a reel on the crank and make ice cream while sitting in front of the fireplace. “That’s the best ice cream,” says the 91 year old. Daughter Linda Roth says the hand cranked ice cream has been a Saturday night family tradition since she was a kid. He uses four eggs per gallon, fresh cream and milk to make either maple or vanilla.
