It’s gingerbread time again — New Hamburg’s edible architecture competition is returning for another year.
This year’s theme is “Castles around the World.”
Gingerbread artists have five different categories to enter: children, adults (16 and over), family, VIP (for businesses and public offices), and elite (for professional bakers)
Winners will receive cash prizes totaling $1,600.
The event is sponsored by local businesses, including Josslin Insurance, Cooks Pharmacy, and the New Hamburg Independent.
The winning castles will also be displayed in downtown businesses’ windows in December.
The contest usually receives some amazing creations, said organizer Helen Rempel.
Entries must be brought to the New Apostolic Church on Waterloo Street, across from Forest Glen School, between 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 1.
Judging begins sharply at 7:30.
Public viewing takes place Dec. 2 at 5 p.m., with an awards ceremony at 7 p.m.
The contest has grown each year, with roughly 35 entries in 2009. The committee is very excited for another great turnout.
