Tree of Light shines despite downtown power outage

The Lions and Lioness Tree of Light lit up the night Friday as a crowd of about 150 spectators helped kick off the holiday season with caroling as snow filled the night sky.

The annual event was threatened by a power outage caused after a raised grain auger struck hydro wires at the B and W Feed Mill on Peel Street Friday afternoon. Firefighters helped by setting up a fire truck to power lights, and power was rerouted to allow the ceremony to go ahead.

The crowd enjoyed hot dogs and hot apple cider while listening to the harmonies of the Sweet Adelines before the countdown to light the tree.

Money raised from the event will support the work of the Wilmot Family Resource Centre, Interfaith Community Counselling and Aldaview Services. Organizers hoped to raise $12,000 this year.
